yes it is ofc. but as i said you have to add a layermask to solve problems like that. just apply the L channel to the mask of the curves and adjust it to your needs

Nice tutorial :)
I can't effectively use curves since I only have Elements (so I have to stick with hue/brightness/color varation adjustments) but it looks really helpful.
